Telepaideia classes are taught online in small groups. The Spring 2019 semester runs for ten weeks: from the week of February 25th to the week of May 6th. To enroll, please fill out the form linked at the bottom of the page and pay by credit card. Information about Google Meet technology and instructions on how to join the classes will be emailed in the week before the start of the class.
Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are available for Telepaideia courses. Students interested in taking the course for CEU credit should indicate this on their enrollment form and will be asked to submit a short (1/2-page) written reflection at the end of the course.
Intensive Latin and Greek
These intensive Latin and Greek courses are offered for complete beginners. They cover all of Latin and Greek grammar in ten weeks, and prepare students to read texts at an intermediate level. Telepaideia intensive courses use both traditional presentation of Latin and Greek grammar in English and spoken Latin and Ancient Greek teaching techniques.

Course Description: Plato's Republic, Book I. This class is a continuous reading and translating line by line of the indicated masterpiece of Attic prose (presenting the earliest and still not decisively refuted philosophical argument for immorality [sic]), with close attention to grammar/syntax and the logic of the argument. Sight reading is not required, home preparation is essential.

Greek: Homer's Odyssey 17: Recognition and Rejection - FULL
Course Description: In this Greek reading group, we shall read, translate, and discuss the majority of book 17 of the Odyssey, in which Odysseus returns to his palace disguised as a beggar and encounters the haughty suitors for the first time. No one seems to recognize him except for his ancient hunting dog Argos, who greets him in a scene of legendary pathos. This course is a continuation of previous reading courses on the Odyssey, though new participants are always very welcome.

Course Description: In this course we will read several speeches by the Athenian speechwriter Lysias. This course will be perfect for a student who has completed at least one year of Classical Greek and may have some experience reading Greek prose. We will also devote a great deal of attention to reviewing grammatical concepts as they come up in the reading to ensure that the student receives/maintains a firm footing in the mechanics of the language.

LATIN: CICERO'S SOMNIUM SCIPIONIS
Course Description: In this course, we will read the famed set piece in the sixth book of Cicero’s De Re Publica, in
which Scipio Aemilianus is visited by his grandfather-by-adoption Scipio Africanus. In this piece
Scipio Aemilianus sees the inner workings of the cosmos, understands the music of the spheres,
and discusses the nature of the Divine from a Stoic perspective. We will read the entirety of this
set piece as well as discuss relevant philosophical topics. This course will be conducted in Latin
as much as possible.

Course Description: In this course, we will use Oerberg’s famed Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata, its companion book
Colloquia Personarum, and Nepos’ Life of Alcibiades to read as much Latin as possible in a 10-week span that starts simply with introductory text graded up to authorial Latin. 4 Chapters/ Colloquia will be read a week for 8 weeks and the last two weeks will be spent on Nepos’ life. This course is intended for those who have already completed Latin grammar and wish to
supercharge, ut ita dicam, their ability to read Latin texts in as short a time as possible. This course will be conducted mostly in Latin.

Course Description: Course Description: In this conversational practice group, we shall read and discuss selections (about half of the entire work) from Cicero's dialogue concerning friendship. Participants will spend sessions reading passages aloud and explaining/discussing them in simpler Latin. We shall also spend time discussing the themes and greater context of Cicero's philosophical work. While this group is something of a continuation of last term's group on the De Senectute, new participants are very welcome.
Level: This course is intended for those with a solid knowledge of Latin grammar, and at least some experience speaking Latin in an immersion environment. Advanced speakers seeking an opportunity for extended practice are also very welcome.

ADVANCED CONVERSATIONAL LATIN: CICERO'S DE ORATORE
Course Description: Marcus Tullius Cicero, the famous orator, philosopher and statesman wrote several treatises on rhetoric, but his most important work on this topic was De oratore. Cicero wrote this dialog at a time of personal crisis and political disturbances in Rome, and it is of great importance because Cicero elaborated in it his most important ideas concerning the nature of the ideal orator and the connections between philosophy and eloquence. In this course, students will read and discuss selected passages from Cicero's De oratore in the original language.

with other participants to engage in lively and civil discussion. We will consider how we can use

ADVANCED CONVERSATIONAL GREEK: Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics
Course Description: Aristotle's famous work, the Nicomachean Ethics, deals with the questions of happiness, described by Aristotle as the highest goal of human existence, and virtuous life. In the Nicomachean Ethics, one of the few Aristotelian works actually written by Aristotle himself, the author does not simply theorize about moral questions; he considers ethics and moral philosophy to be practical and not theoretical. MODERN GREEK READING COURSE: MODERN GREEK AESTHETICISM: GOD IN EXILE, HOMEWARD BOUND
Course Description: This course focuses on the late 19th century Greek Aesthetes. Like their British contemporaries (such as Oscar Wilde, who we will also read in translation), the Aesthetes of Athens tried to reformulate the idea of classicism into a radical ideal. The prose of Episkopopoulos, Rodokanakis, and, above all, Giannopoulos transformed the study of Classical Greece into a productive mode of art.

MODERN GREEK READING COURSE: WOMEN OF HOMER BY OSCAR WILDE
Course Description: A classicist well influenced by Plato and Aristotle’s Ethics on his major work The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde studied classics at Magdalen College, Oxford. As an undergraduate there, he decided to write a long essay surveying the chapter “Women of Homer” from John Addington Symonds’s Studies of the Greek Poets. But young Wilde’s project became bigger than he expected. It was August 1876, an inspiring vacation in Ireland, and he ended up writing an unfinished idiosyncratic introduction to the major of Homer’s heroines. First published by the Oscar Wilde Society and edited by Thomas Wright and Donald Mead, Women of Homer is Oscar Wilde’s earliest surviving prose work, his first attempt at reviewing, with all the later elements of Aesthetic Philosophy that define him in his work The critic as artist. Together we will read a modern greek translation of the text, along with the original, despite the negative opinions on Wilde’s essay that Mr. Daniel Mendelsohn has expressed.
