The Brightheart Fellowship
The Paideia Institute invites artists of all media to apply for the Brightheart Fellowship at Living Greek in Greece. The Fellowship provides for a visiting artist to pursue an independent project alongside the Living Greek in Greece program in the summer of 2024. The project ideally involves a classical element or coincides with the theme of the Living Greek in Greece program. The Fellowship is a special opportunity for an artist to share in the rich intellectual environment of Living Greek in Greece and to be inspired by the stunning setting of the Greek Peloponnese.
Previous artists in residence have included: Joe Gassert, Maud Taber-Thomas, Chris Childers, Joe McDonough, Chas LiBretto, and Benjamin Sherman, musician, who co-wrote a musical take on Euripides' Helen, collaborating with Living Greek in Greece students to perform the play at the end the program; Henry Walters, poet, who wrote poems that mused on the endeavor of learning ancient Greek; Vanessa Ruth Stovall, composer. Proposed collaboration between the artist and the students of Living Greek in Greece is not necessary for a project proposal.
History
The Brightheart Fellowship was founded in honor of the late Professor Doctor Helmut Λευκόθυμος "Leukothumos" Quack, a German high school teacher who for many years organized an annual gathering of artists, musicians, and speakers of Ancient Greek at the Hellenikon Idyllion, the beautiful resort in Selianitika that now hosts Living Greek in Greece.
Fellowship Details
The Fellowship provides the artist in residence with flights and housing for the duration of the Living Greek in Greece program, which runs from July 28th to August 9th, 2024. To be considered for the fellowship, please apply using the link below by May 1, 2024.
